Shock, Water & Dust Resistant Cell Phones

Three years ago two manfacturers of cell phones mad water and dust resistant cell phones - a necessity for the tropics Surfing the web to find a replacement for my rotting ericsson R310s I find the Nokia website is 3 years out of date..
I'm looking for a commo unit without the cameras, bells and whistles that will survive the monsoons and operate for several years
Is that too much to ask?

I can only share that I worked for a non-cellphone related part of Mot as a contractor and the outlook I see for such devices is grim. Not enough volume to justify the continued production. And when you do the numbers on the remaining consumers of said product, they won't buy if for the over thousand dollar price tags you see for the ruggedized units.

You may be stuck with what you can find and replace it yearly.

Since Nextel deals a lot with clients who are contractors/contruction workers --who are subject to extreme environments, you might want to look into their phones and service. They do offer a phone that is ruggedized. Check out the Motorola i305 on this page:

motorola make a water resistant phone, but i wont buy their phones as they also make undetectable land mines.
i am waiting for a company with ethics to make a waterproof phone, is that too much to ask?

Look into Casio phones. They also make rugged/weather resistant phones.
